Open Letter for Membership in APICC
Alaska currently has many large scale resource development projects, with many more on the horizon that promise job growth; hence workforce development needs in process industries. APICC has been, and continues to be, at the forefront in connecting the workforce development needs of processes industries with Alaskan secondary education and post-secondary educational institutions. We have a history of collaboration with member industries and businesses, the Alaska Department of Education, Alaska’s public schools, the University of Alaska system, regional training centers, Alaska’s private education providers, the Alaska Department of Labor and Workforce Development, and many other Alaska workforce development initiatives.
Your membership in APICC, as a stakeholder in Alaska’s workforce development, with APICC’s history as an industry, education, labor, and trade leader, will enable us to continue this legacy. Today, APICC has a dedicated staff, a talented board of directors, and a clear strategic plan to address both the challenges and opportunities on Alaska’s economic horizon. We plan on not only being full participants, but leading the way in industry driven data, needs, standards and curriculum to meet present and future workforce challenges. We remain committed to communicating employability skill needs to Alaska’s education and workforce development communities. We will continue to provide best practices in career development through TIE externships for Alaska’s educators, career awareness activities, and science and technology experiences for Alaska’s youth and citizens.
APICC’s “Putting Alaska’s Resources to Work” (PARW) initiative consists of an industry-led, evolving and broad based alliance of oil, gas and mining industries and workforce development organizations working together to ensure Alaska will have a highly skilled and globally competitive workforce that meets the current and future needs of Alaska’s process industries. The PARW initiative compiles industry needs and reports priority occupations for process industry careers.
APICC’s educational initiatives have provided “Youth Employability Skills” (YES) that are work readiness standards for Alaska young people and residents preparing to enter the job market. APICC coordinates “Teacher Industry Externships” (TIE) for educators working with students in grades 7 through 12 to connect the needs of business and industry with teachers in Alaska. Building on these career initiatives, APICC has been a leader in developing practical career guidance materials for Alaska’s counselors, teachers, students, and parents, and an Alaska Process Industry Career Guide. Moreover, APICC works directly with Alaska’s post-secondary education community to develop needs-driven industry standards and training, thereby enhancing Alaskan hire into current high demand occupations. APICC works with industry members to host Career Awareness Workshops (CAW) and Science & Technology Previews (STeP) events. The workforce development initiatives of APICC have benefits for the entire Alaska business community.
APICC’s “North Slope Training Cooperative” (NSTC) develops and maintains high quality, standardized health, safety, and environmental training programs, and instructor qualification for your employee and contractor workforce. It provides coordination and logistical support of the Cooperative. The NSTC is responsible for on-going oversight of the licensed Third-Party Providers and coordination of program evaluations and audits. The NSTC coordinates the instructor qualification process; facilitates meetings of the Steering Committee Operators Group and Client Training Team; and provides program assistance to member company’s employees. 2009 is going to be an effective year for APICC and its member organizations to advance collaborative efforts in workforce development, career awareness and advocacy, industry externships for educators, and standardized health, safety and environmental training for North Slope workers. We are working on many exciting projects to advance these efforts.
Your membership in APICC, in collaboration with other Alaska industries and companies, education providers, government, labor and trade organization members, will work to help build a sustainable system of workforce development and career pathways for Alaska’s citizens.
If you believe in educating Alaskans about Alaska jobs and training Alaskans for Alaskan careers, your organization can be a part of the Alaska Process Industry Careers Consortium. Visit APICC online at: www.apicc.org APICC is located in Anchorage at 2600 Denali, Suite 700.
