 Teacher Industry Externships

The TIE Program is...

Why should our company host a teacher extern?

"Our commitment is to hire local...
And the only way we’re going to do that is to work with our local schools in order to bridge the local workforce from our youth."

~ Meg Day, Past TIE Host with Coeur Alaska

Teacher Industry Externships offered by Alaskan industries provide valuable learning opportunities for Alaska’s teachers and, in turn, their students.

TIE improves educators’ understanding of Alaska’s industries by giving teachers a chance to work alongside industry employees.

In the classroom, educators share their experiences with Alaskan youth; Teachers are better able to convey the career opportunities that are available to students and the education and training required for those careers.

Tens of thousands of middle and high school students attend class every day in Alaska.  Externships provide teachers with experiences needed to link their curriculum to real world applications and in-state career opportunities for Alaska’s youth.

Strategic, cost-effective efforts are needed to recruit, educate, train and employ new Alaskan workers.

The TIE program is a creative and meaningful way to bring awareness and objective knowledge of industry operations to stakeholder communities.

Reaching Alaska’s developing workforce through our schools is an economical way to relate real world views of industry and present in-state career opportunities to Alaska’s youth.

What people are saying about TIE

"As a teacher, when your able to live in what you teach, and really understand it, there’s kind of a passion that develops for what your teaching. Through the Externship, being able to go out to the project and being able to live there, and kind of live in the space and live in the careers that are going on out there, I feel like I was able to understand it…. and because I was really able to understand it at that level I’ll be able to teach it well."
~ Michael Warren, Teacher Extern - Central Middle School of Science

"The teachers are being exposed to the different types of industry, occupations and jobs that are out in the community. They are then able to bring that back into the classroom and share that information and get kids interested for any careers that they may want to pursue in their future."
~ Carol Wren, Director of Employment Training Services - Cook Inlet Tribal Council

"I think the benefit to industry is just getting teachers out there with that positive message. I mean the amount of students we see. 2000 kids with one resource person. I mean it’s up to the staff to tell these kids what jobs are out there. I don’t think you should miss-judge the influence that good teachers have on students - it’s huge."
~ Sven Berglund, Teacher Extern - West High School

"The TIE Program is another opportunity to give the teachers, to share in the understanding of what we do so that they can not only teach curriculum from the standpoint of science, but they also have the opportunity to give those students potentially a career pathway, which would be an employer who is right in their back yard."
~ Meg Day, HR Manager - Donlin Gold
