The Alaska Process Industry Careers Consortium (APICC) partners with companies in the mining, construction, and oil and gas industry to offer business-related externships for educators working with students in grades 7 through 12. The program is offered in partnership with the Alaska Department of Labor and with the assistance of grant funds through the Alaska Youth First Program.
Teacher industry externships help educators gain a greater understanding of the business world, the chance to upgrade their own knowledge and skills about how academic concepts are used in the workplace, and a better understanding of the careers available for Alaska’s youth.
Educators will have the opportunity to work with an industry host for approximately 2 weeks to complete a project that serves their host’s purpose. Projects may take many shapes, including: statistical research, marketing analysis, curriculum writing, environmental and community issues research, web site design, and teaching employee workshops. Open, ongoing and frequent communication with your industry host is essential to develop and complete a mutually meaningful project. Externs and hosts are expected to be proactive throughout the process.
Program Highlights:
·You get paid a stipend (upon completion)
·Upon completion of the coursework, you will earn 3 free UAA professional development credits.
·You have the opportunity to upgrade your own knowledge and skills and understanding of the business environment and how your teaching skills impact students’ ability to make career decisions.
